La Redazione di Universo Fantasy ha intervistato per voi Jim Kay, l’illustratore che collabora con la scrittrice J.K. Rowling per la realizzazione della nuova collezione di libri interamente illustrata della saga di “Harry Potter”.
L’abbiamo intervistato pochi giorni fa, proprio in visione dell’imminente uscita del terzo volume “Harry Potter e il prigioniero di Azkaban”, previsto per il 3 Ottobre 2017 in Gran Bretagna (mentre in Italia non c’è ancora una data ufficiale).
Abbiamo avuto il piacere e l’onore di sottoporgli le nostre domande, parlarci con calma per conoscerlo meglio e comprendere molte sfaccettature della sua personalità, nonché dell’amore per l’arte ed il disegno.
Per rompere il ghiaccio, abbiamo iniziato parlando del suo esordio nel mondo delle illustrazioni, della passione, dell’esperienza personale in questo ambito, fino a giungere al lavoro svolto insieme alla Rowling e dei suoi progetti futuri.
Nonostante sia incredibilmente impegnato e immerso in questo bellissimo progetto, ha comunque dedicato il suo tempo per rispondere a tutte le nostre domande.
Le sue illustrazioni rendono questa nuova edizione di Harry Potter un pezzo da collezione di cui è impossibile non innamorarsi. Kay ci apre la porta della sua mente, trasportando il lettore in un modo di colori accesi e di dettagli incredibili, riuscendo a mettere ancora più magia in questi libri, che già sono incredibilmente magici di per sé.

Cari potterheads, ecco cosa ci ha raccontato Jim Kay.
1. Come è iniziata la tua relazione con l’arte?
Tutto ebbe inizio quando seguii una piccola esibizione d’arte in una galleria gestita dal comune a Richmond, a Londra. Le autorità locali che gestiscono questi spazi d’arte sono soliti chiamare a gran voce persone per cercare di riempirli. Sarebbe meglio iniziare contattando queste gallerie. Io, all’epoca, stavo vivendo in Twickenham e sono stato in grado di allestire una esibizione d’arte alla Galleria d’arte del Riverside in Richmond, grazie al custode che lavorava lì. Abbiamo avuto più di 4,000 visitatori, compresa la stampa locale, che attrasse l’interesse di un editore.
2. Ti consideri un autodidatta o hai avuto bisogno di studiare?
Mi considero un artista rappresentativo e concettuale. Sto sempre lavorando direttamente per dei clienti, in risposta ad un testo o ad un corto, dove le arti figurative approcciano immagini prodotte da diverse angolazioni. Mi piace affidarmi ad altre persone, la collaborazione e i continui feedback che arrivano lavorando con scrittori o editori aiutano molto a migliorarsi. Ma si, qualche volta mi considero anche un autodidatta.
3. Che scuola hai frequentato? Come è stato?
Una scuola della città di Londra. La mia era una buona scuola e tutti gli insegnanti erano competenti. Ma i ragazzini mi hanno sempre stuzzicato e sono stati dei momenti molto dolorosi per me. Oltre questo, tutti i ricordi che ho sulla scuola sono positivi (ride).
4. Quali sono stati i tuoi più importanti risultati?
Quando vedo me stesso impegnato in qualche lavoro e le persone a me più care che apprezzano. Cosa ci può essere di meglio?
5. Hai mai pensato di arrenderti? Perché?
Mai. Amo il mio lavoro e la grande forza interiore che mi ha dato. Quando produco i miei disegni è il cuore che pensa, non la mente.
6. Come ti sei sentito dopo che J.K. Rowling ti ha scelto come illustratore dei suoi libri?
Non avevo mai illustrato libri per bambini prima d’ora. O niente che fosse lontanamente gioioso o allegro. Chi non ha mai sognato di dare uno stile nuovo e diverso ad Hogwarts, ad Harry e ad alcuni dei personaggi più amati nella storia della letteratura per bambini? Senza menzionare il fatto che è anche il più famoso film del suo genere. Mi sono sentito molto felice quando J.K. Rowling mi ha scelto.
7. Eri un fan di Harry Potter anche prima di iniziare a lavorare per lei?
Assolutamente. Supporto J.K. Rowling e il suo magico modo di pensare, che sarà adottato da tutti nel futuro. Harry Potter sarà per sempre ricordato nelle pagine di storia.
8. Come è lavorare con lei?
Bellissimo! Lei apprezza sempre i miei lavori.
9. Il mondo di Harry Potter è veramente grande, come ti senti sapendo che il tuo nome sarà per sempre connesso a lui?
Non penso sia così. Forse, con il tempo, alcuni degli artisti più eccelsi di questa epoca saranno in grado di far brillare la storia di Harry Potter ancora di più.
10. Il nuovo libro sarà pubblicato ad Ottobre: hai un disegno in particolare che possiamo mostrare ai nostri lettori?
C’è un’immagine che mi piace particolarmente…

11. C’è un libro di Harry Potter che non vedi l’ora di illustrare?
Credo che Harry Potter sia in sé una famiglia, nella quale tutti vorrebbero entrare a far parte. Io sto ancora vivendo in questo mondo e, forse, lo sto vivendo attraverso i miei disegni.
12. Inoltre, c’è qualcosa del mondo di Harry Potter che vuoi veramente illustrare? Perché?
La pittura è qualcosa in continuo cambiamento, la quale viene dal cuore dell’oceano e arriva alla carta.
13. Stai lavorando o hai in piano altri progetti?
Non ancora. Attualmente sto lavorando ad “Harry Potter e il Calice di fuoco”, il quale spero venga pubblicato l’anno prossimo. Questo libro è uno dei miei preferiti.
14. Quali sono i tuoi pensieri per il futuro dopo che finirai la tua collaborazione con J.K. Rowling?
Uhmmm…Non ci ho ancora pensato.

The editorial staff of Universo Fantasy interviewed Jim Kay for you, the illustrator who collaborates with the famous writer J.K. Rowling for the creation of the new series of Harry Potter completely illustrated.
Few days ago we talked with him, considering that in October, the 3rd, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” is going to be published.
We had the pleasure and the honour to ask him our questions, to know him better and understand a little bit more about his personality, but especially his love for the art.
To break the ice, we started talking about how his relationship with arts started, his passions, his personal experiences in this field, until his work with J.K. Rowling and his projects for the future.
Nevertheless Jim Kay is very busy with his endless beautiful work, he found the time to answer at all our questions.
His illustrations make this new Harry Potter’s edition a piece for collectors, who will certainly fall in love with it. Kay opens the door to his mind and shows to readers a colourful world with a lot of incredible details. He has been able to bring more magic in these books, if it was even possible!

1. How did your relationship with art start?
I first got on the art scene following a small exhibition at a council run gallery in Richmond, London. The local authority run art and gallery spaces are usually crying out for people to fill exhibition slots and spaces. It might be best starting with contacting such galleries. I was living in Twickenham and got an exhibition at the Riverside Gallery in Richmond through the curator there. We had over 4,000 visitors, and local press, which attracted the attention of a publisher.
2. Did you considered yourself a self-thought person or did you need to study?
(I consider myself) a performance and conceptual artist. I am always working directly for a client, in response to a text or a brief, whereas fine art approaches image making from a very different angle. I like the dependence upon other people, the collaborative side of it, and the constant feedback that comes with working with writers and publishers. Yes some times I considered my self a self-thought person too.
3. Where did you go to school? How was it?
A City of London school. My school was great and all teachers were good, but boys always teasing me. These moments were so painful to me. Otherwise all school momeries were good (hahaha).
4. What are your most important achievements?
When I see myself doing work and my loved ones like my work then….what can be the biggest achievements with this.
5. Have you ever thought about giving up? (Why/Why not?)
Never. I loved my work, it gives me inside power. And I make these pictures with my heart that thinks, not the mind, but the heart.
6. How did you feel after J.K. Rowling chose you to be the illustrator of her books?
I had not illustrated children before. Or anything remotely cheerful or happy. Who has dreamt up a completely new look for Hogwarts, Harry and some of the best-loved characters in the history of children’s literature – not to mention the biggest movie franchise of its kind ever. I feel happy when JK chose me.
7. Were you a fan of Harry Potter before starting to work with her?
Absolutely! I support JK with her magical thinking today, Harry Potter will be remembered forever in the pages of history, who will be adopted by everyone in the future.
8. How is working with her?
It was great! She always like my work.
9. HP’s world is really big, how do you feel knowing that your name will be always connected to it?
I do not think so. Maybe, after a long time, some of the finest artists from this history can make this story of Harry Potter’s big story shine.
10. The new book is going to be released in October: do you have a favourite picture that we can show to our readers?
I like this picture.

11. Is there an HP’s book you really can’t wait to illustrate?
I believe that Harry Potter is a family in himself, everybody wants to live it. I am still living in it and maybe I am living myself by my pictures.
12. Furthermore, is there something about the HP’s world you really want to illustrate? Why?
Painting is something that keeps changing. Which comes out of the heart of the ocean and comes on the paper.
13. Are you working or planning other projects?
Not yet, I’m working on HP 4. I hope next year “Harry Potter and the goblet fire” illustrate book comes to HP Fan’s. This book is one of my favorite.
14. What are your thoughts for the future after you will finish this collaboration with J.K. Rowling?
Uhmmm…Not to think of this yet.
